Prices depend more on the time of year in which you are travelling rather than the time of year you book. It's a little far off, but start looking. Because of competition, Tuesday and Wednesday are the best days of the week to look. Join as many airmiles programs that you can and you will get emails about special fares. Sometimes as low as 400 roundtrip. Expect to pay anywhere from 600-800.
kayak.com is the best site I have found for air travel. It searches all the other large engines – orbitz, cheaptickets, etc. – for the lowest prices available.

Well, you probably can't "get around" all of them, but priority boarding and seat selection should be simple enough to avoid.

I've traveled by train in China since 1984 and I could pretend to be the expert on train travel in China, but the real expert is Mark Smith. His website is mostly up-to-date and contains a wealth of information and interesting tips, and will give you everything you want to know about train travel in China and incidentally around the world.

    Ciao!

Airlines require that if you are bringing a LAP baby that you CALL and tell them as the childs name must appear on the passenger list for safety reasons. I think you can book on line…just call them and ask and then call back after you book the flight and give them the details so they will expect you to be bringing a baby. See site below to read United's policy…then call your specific airline.

Christmas and the days immediately surrounding it are some of the busiest travel days of the year. Airlines have little incentive to reduce prices during that period, as the demand exists to fill planes just about everywhere. In fact, prices tend to only increase as you get closer, because cheaper seats will be purchased as time progresses.

The fact that half of the seats are available is ultimately meaningless — a bunch of tickets could have been sold without seat assignments. I'd buy your tickets now — they are likely to only increase from this point forward.
