Depends from where to where exactly, as for example, Martinair have last-minutes from Amsteram to Florida only available on their website and nowhere else; this wouldn't do much good if you need Kiev to Spokane.

Please add where and when, and I will give you the 3 best sources for that particular route. I'll check back to complete my answer for you.

They will save you loads of time searching the best fares, as they cover all the rest–including the long list in the first reply (some of which don't work for Europe-US flights, by the way)–with just 1 input of cities and dates. My second link does not do bookings–it shows you who's cheapest on which dates, then you take those dates to the first and third. Among these 3, I believe you will find the best offer.

Try FareChase, they search dozens of websites for you, so you dont have to!!! Saves time and money. Easiest way to find cheap airfare to Las Vegas. I'm addicted to the site – use it all the time!

I think your best option is going to be to book with a travel agent. Find one that specializes in the destinations you are looking into. This way they will have all the answers to your questions, be able to give recommendations, etc.

Otherwise, you are better off booking air and hotels directly with the companies. Avoid sites like Expedia and Orbitz, their prices tend to be higher than booking with the companies directly or with a travel agent. Not to mention all the people that have had problems with bookings. You may also have difficulty in making changes or cancellations. Since you are really aren't sure yet of what you want to do, I would definitely stay away from the online discounters, at least until you decide on where you want to go.

If you are wanting to book with the online discounters, they are all pretty much the same as price. You could look into cancellation fees and other policies to decide which one to book with!

It is a gamble either way – fares can go go up or down. Often (certainly for domestic flights) the cheapest way to buy seats is well in advance, but specials do come up from time-to-time.

Air New Zealand auctions international fares with $1 reserves on sella.co.nz on weekly 24 hour sales (Thursdays, I think). Don't get too excited about the reserve though, they do go up a LOT from there and there's no guarantee that there'll be any to Japan when you want to go – but it's worth a try

I have found the cheapest fares at http://www.qixo.com and http://www.airfare.com.

Farecaster.com predicts if fares will go up or down based on historical rates.
