Is $99 one way expensive. Are you flying back home from Rome? You can get $99 one way on europebyair.com. You can probably do even better on one of the many, many discounter in Europe. If you are only going to stay 1 or 2 nights in Rome, take the train from the airport to the Rome Central station. To the left (as you exit the station) in the direction of the Vatican is the old Centrum of Rome. Any mom and pop style place is good. It is best just get a room on hotels.com. That is what I always do. I pick a 1 or 2 start place. They are no flea bag hotels, they are all clean, and adequate. You only sleep there. If you stay in the Centrum, you can walk to the Vatican in 30 minutes and walk to anything you have every heard of in the same about of time-- all the ancient stuff is way, way closer than you think.
